Pet First Aid
An emergency pet first aid kit could save your pet’s life. With the help of the Red Cross, the staff at Bay East Animal Hospital has come up with a tentative list of items that should be included in your kit.
- Latex gloves
- Gauze sponges (a variety of sizes)
- 2” wide roll gauze
- Roll bandages
- Adhesive tape
- Non-adherent sterile pads
- Small scissors
- Nylon leash
- Muzzle
- Blanket, preferably thermal
- Rectal thermometer
- Sterile lubricant
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Rubbing alcohol
- Topical antibiotic ointment
- Epsom salt
- Baby dose syringe or plastic eye dropper
- Petroleum jelly
- Emergency telephone numbers such as:
- Your pet’s veterinarian
- An emergency veterinary hospital (for after hours)
- The National Animal Poison Control Center (1-800-548-2423 or 1-900-680-0000; there are fees involved with these numbers)
Your pet first aid kit should be stored in an appropriate box and kept safely out of a
child’s reach. Kits similar to the one above are available at your local Red Cross.
